Questions and Answers Regarding 2011 Tryouts

Question: Why outdoor tryouts?
Answer: Outdoor tryouts will give our evaluators a much truer view of our boys’ skills in conditions that are closer to actual game situations. Watching boys field ground balls, fly balls and hitting pitched balls outdoors on an actual baseball field should be a major improvement over indoor gym tryouts.

Question: Why August?
Answer: Families will be back from vacation and baseball skill levels will still be sharp and indicative of skills exhibited during previous season.

Question: Who will be conducting the tryouts? And how will the selection of the 24 players be made?
Answer: LFBA will be engaging an independent set of baseball coaches and trainers to assess players’ batting, pitching, catching, outfield, infield and base running skills. Each player will receive a skill score which combines tryout results and inputs from their previous season’s coach’s evaluation.

Question: Are you selecting a Blue and Gold team right after the August tryouts?
Answer:  No, we will be selecting just the 24 boys for the upcoming season.

Question: What happens after the 24 boys have been selected? And how and when will you select the Blue and Gold teams from the selected group?

Answer: After tryouts LFBA will sponsor periodic baseball conditioning sessions throughout the late fall and winter for the 24 boys selected. In January and February, age group directors and their coaches will conduct a series of optional indoor practices, followed by regular indoor practice evaluations starting in early March. Based on skill scores from tryouts, previous season’s coaches’ evaluations and the March indoor practice evaluations, age group coaches along with the age group director will select players for the Blue and Gold teams. No evaluations will be done during the winter optional workouts.

Question: Will LFBA player fees be due after tryouts?
Answer: Yes, LFBA will require one third of the annual fee shortly after the 24 boy age group rosters are announced to secure a player’s position on the team.

Question: If a player misses tryouts (and the make-up) in the fall, will there be any opportunity to still play travel baseball at the start of the following spring season?
Answer: Yes it is possible, but highly unlikely. All players not on a Blue or Gold team who wish to participate in travel baseball are encouraged to play on one of the Rec League All-Star teams.

Question: If a player leaves the program between the fall selection time and next spring, how will that player’s position be filled?
Answer: After the August tryouts, 24 boys will be chosen for each age group. If a boy decides not to play or moves between the end of tryouts and when the teams are selected, we will invite the boy ranked 25th to fill his spot. If that boy declines, we’ll keep going down the list until the spot is filled. Note, it is not mandatory that either team has 12 players. 11 players is acceptable and may be the result if safety becomes an issue.

Once the teams are chosen, at some point in March, if a boy on the Blue team does not play for whatever reason, an invitation will be extended to the top ranked boy on the Gold team to fill the Blue spot. Once the spot on the Blue team is filled, we will extend an offer to the boy ranked 25th to fill the now open spot on the Gold team. If a Gold team player is unable to play, then we will extend an offer to the boy ranked 25th to fill the now open spot.

Question: If there are not enough players trying out in the fall to form two teams (Blue and Gold), will LFBA allow for additional players to be added in the spring to form the second team? If yes, how will this be done?
Answer: Yes, the new players will be evaluated during the March indoor practices and selected according to talent level as determined by the Coaches and Age director.

Questions: What happens if in the spring a selected player is unable to participate? Will our player fee be refunded?
Answer: No refunds will be given. Funds from the partial payments made following tryouts will be used, in part, to pay for winter workouts.

Question: What happens if a boy cannot make the tryouts in August?
Answer: Like prior years, a make-up tryout session will be provided in an effort to allow all players the opportunity to participate.

Question: If a player is selected to be one of the 24 and does not know if he will be selected for the Blue or Gold team, will the player still have to submit his player fee payment?
Answer: Yes, and any partial or full fee payments are nonrefundable.

Question: If a team coach is not known at the time a player is asked to submit his partial or full player fee, does he have an option of delaying payment until such time as a coach is selected?
Answer: No.

Question:  What if a boy moves into the area after tryouts or a boy decides he would like to tryout after August?
Answer:  Once the 24 boys are selected there will not be a roster opening until one of the selected players decides not to participate in LFBA, which would open up a roster spot.
